Karimunjawa travel guide
Everything practical you need to know before travelling to Karimunjawa.
Where is Karimunjawa?
Karimunjawa is an archipelago of 27 islands in the Java Sea, around 80 km off the north coast of Central Java. Most of the area is a protected marine national park.
From Jepara
The main port is Kartini Harbour in Jepara. The Siginjai Ferry takes about 5 hours; the Express Bahari Fastboat about 2.5 hours. Schedules vary — ask us for the latest timetable when booking.
From Semarang
From Semarang it is roughly a 2.5-hour car/shuttle transfer to Kartini Harbour in Jepara, then onward by boat. Direct flights from Semarang to Karimunjawa also operate on selected days.
From Yogyakarta
From Yogyakarta it is roughly a 4.5–5.5 hour road transfer to Jepara, then onward by boat. Alternative: a flight from Yogyakarta when available.
From Surabaya
From Surabaya, the most common option is a train or car to Semarang or Jepara, then the boat. Total travel time is around 8–10 hours depending on connections.
Siginjai vs Express Bahari
The Siginjai Ferry is a large ship — more stable in rough seas, cheaper, but takes around 5 hours. The Express Bahari Fastboat is faster (about 2.5 hours) and more comfortable in good weather, but more sensitive to heavy swell.
Best time to visit
April–October usually offers the most favourable weather. The rainy season (November–March) brings higher waves and a higher chance of boat delays.
ATM and cash
ATMs on the island are limited (only BRI) and occasionally down. Bring enough cash from Jepara/Semarang. Many warungs and small operators do not accept card payments.
Internet and SIM cards
Telkomsel generally has the most stable coverage. Hotel Wi-Fi is available but speeds vary. Signal at sea or on smaller islands may drop.
Weather and possible boat delays
Boats only sail when sea conditions are safe. Delays or cancellations can happen without much advance notice. Always have a backup plan.
What to bring
- Swimwear, hat, sunglasses.
- Reef-safe sunscreen.
- Sea-sickness tablets if you are sensitive.
- Waterproof camera, power bank.
- Personal medication.
Sea safety
Always wear a life jacket during the crossing and while snorkelling. Follow the captain's and guide's instructions.
National park / conservation rules
Do not touch or step on coral, do not take marine life, and do not leave any waste behind.
If the weather turns bad
If a boat is cancelled, we help rearrange your accommodation, transfers and activity schedule.
Avoid tight onward flights
Do not book an onward international flight on the same day you return from Karimunjawa — always keep at least one buffer night in Semarang/Yogyakarta/Jakarta.
